The 3.5-kDa membrane-associated protein of Escherichia coli, L and S, which is synthesized late in the growth cycle, plays a role in the recognition of FtsI and II, the sorting subunits of the Fts system. Here we report the nucleotide sequence of the gene (lpp) that encodes this protein and the location of the Lpp gene in the chromosome of a highly lpp-positive strain of E. coli K-12. The Lpp gene is located within a 50-nucleotide open reading frame (ORF) in the DNA of this strain and encodes a protein of 56 amino acids. The amino-terminal region of the protein (amino acids 1-56) is located in the cytoplasm. The sequence of the central region (amino acids 57-85) contains an approximate repeat sequence, Ser-Lys-Glu-Lys-Glu-Val, a sequence that is highly conserved in the membrane-associated proteins of gram-negative bacteria. The carboxyl-terminal region (amino acids 86-100) is also repeated and contains the potential membrane-spanning domain. The 5' part of the Lpp gene and the 3' part of the L gene lie within a single transcription unit in the chromosome. The amino acid composition of L and S proteins is also consistent with their association with the cytoplasmic membrane.Petroleum refineries, chemical plants and other large chemical manufacturing and production plants use various processing units or devices for processing large quantities of gas, liquid or solid materials. These chemical plants include raw-materials-handling systems that serve to supply feedstock materials to a processing device or devices. These raw-materials-handling systems include storage tanks and piping that deliver feedstocks to the processing devices. The storage tanks provide pressurized, filtered or untreated fluid that is supplied to the piping for delivery to the processing device.
One application for the storage tanks is a chemical or chemical-manufacturing facility in which treated or untreated material is processed in one or more steps to produce a chemical intermediate or chemical products. The tanks supply fluid, including raw materials, to the chemical processing devices.
